We are celebrating the absolute premiere of this enigmatic masterpiece in Great Britain with a month of stellar events dedicated to one of the most innovative geniuses of the 20th century classical music. Great singers like David Ohanesian, José Van Dam or Monte Pederson have shone in the notoriously challenging title role. Through a kaleidoscope of rarely seen photographs and reproductions, the George Enescu National Museum's exhibition traces the opera's sinuous fate from its long gestation and rapturous premiere to relative post-war neglect and eventual rediscovery. Curated by musicologist Cristina Andrei, Director of the George Enescu National Museum in Bucharest. more TALK & MUSIC 5 May, 19.00 RCI London Free ENESCU FOR VOICE Enescu is better known as outstanding performer and symphonic composer, yet his musical ventures into the expressive universe of human voice prove no less daring or fascinating. We explore the great composer's vocal legacy through operatic fragments and songs in the company of bass-baritone Johan Reuter, the star of the Covent Garden production, Kasper Holten, Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House, conductor Leo Hussain and composer Dan Dediu. With special appearances by soprano Rodica Vică (Romanian National Opera in Bucharest), accompanied by pianist Diana Ionescu, and Lauren Fagan and Yuriy Yurchuk (both part of Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at ROH), accompanied by Christopher Willis.  more THEATRE 9-26 May, 19.15 Theatre N16, Balham, London Tickets 'I'M NOT JESUS CHRIST' PREMIERES IN LONDON The Romanian Cultural Institute and Papercut Theatre are delighted to present the world premiere of Maria Manolescu's tale of innocence and violence, 'I'm not Jesus Christ', as part of this year's Wandsworth Arts Fringe festival line-up. Developed during the International Residency at the Royal Court Theatre in 2007, the play is the darkly humorous true  story of 11-year old Mihai, raised by his mother to believe he is the Second Coming. The show is directed by Melissa Dunne and produced for Papercut by Cristina Cătălina. more CELEBRATION: FILM 12, 17, 25 & 31 May RCI London Free REVOLUTION IN REALISM: THE FORERUNNERS   As a prelude to the biggest retrospective of Romanian film ever to have graced the British screens, the Romanian Cinematheque in 1 Belgrave Square runs a series of special screenings focusing on the creative antecedents of the New Romanian Cinema. Join us for a month of timeless films that will wet the cinephiles' appetite for much more to come! Full programme and supporters to be announced soon.  more FILM 12 May, 19.00 RCI London Free THE FORERUNNERS: 'THE CONTEST' (1982) Most respected Romanian director Dan Piţa turns an orientation contest taking place in a forest into an ordeal of psychological suspense and, ultimately, an ironic allegory and a subtle satire about the communist regime. Different readings of the film have revealed the advantages of an encoded, parabolic cinema using metaphor to avoid censorship. What starts out as a simple expedition becomes complicated when the group hear a mysterious cry for help and decide to ignore it rather than veer off course. more FILM 17 May, 19.00 RCI London Free THE FORERUNNERS: 'REENACTMENT' (1968) Considered by Romanian critics to be the best film in the history of the country's cinema, 'Reenactment' is remarkable not only due to its artistic merits but also because of its position in the historical and political context, being both a brilliantly subversive film and a brave one. Regarded as one of Europe's finest filmmakers, Lucian Pintilie tells the story of two friends who, for educational purposes, are forced to reenact a crime they committed. Banned in 1970 shortly after its release and without having had an official premiere, 'Reenactment' stand out until today as a fierce criticism of repression, indifference to human dignity and misuse of power. more VISUAL ARTS 22-25 May Tate Modern London Free THE BEAUTY AND THE BOOKS Some of the most beautiful contemporary Romanian books will be on display at Tate Modern as part of Offprint London, the biggest art publishing fair in Britain. In the second half of May, the famous modernist landmark hosts, in its vast Turbine Hall, an entire library of exquisite publications, which gives testimony to the thriving art of superior typography and book design well into the internet age. The Romanian exhibition of art and photography books is curated by PUNCH Bucharest and will feature works published by Asociaţia Peplus4 (coordinated by art historian and curator Alina Șerban), Asociaţia pentru Artă Ilfoveanu, Salonul de Proiecte and Revista Arta.  more MUSIC 23, 26, 30 May & 2, 4, 8 June Royal Opera House Tickets 'OEDIPE' AT COVENT GARDEN Featuring Danish star Johan Reuter in the title role and an excellent cast including Sir John Tomlinson, Sarah Connolly and Sophie Bevan, The Royal Opera's first production of Enescu's operatic masterpiece, directed by Àlex Ollé and Valentina Carrasco of the acclaimed Catalan company La Fura dels Baus, and conducted by Leo Hussain, has its UK premiere on 23 May. Attuned to the trade's latest cries, the Romanian artists offer a vivid illustration of the contemporary reactions to tradition and the often original response to the dominant poetics of forms and space. more FILM 25 May, 19.00 RCI London Free THE FORERUNNERS: 'SEQUENCES' (1982) Alexandru Tatos is an imposing figure of Romanian cinema and an essential influence on its recent directors. His compelling drama 'Sequences', a film about a film, is the only Romanian production depicting the life of its crew, a reason for which it is often compared to Truffaut's 'La Nuit américaine' (1973). Three 'sequences' which could have formed separate stories are linked together, to give a larger perspective on the nature of reality and film. more MUSIC 30 May, 13.00 St Martin-in-the-Fields, London Free YOUTH IN FOCUS AT ST MARTIN-IN-THE-FIELDS Join us for our annual showcase of talent and youthful exuberance featuring the brightest Romanian students of London's grand musical schools. With a programme designed to delight and inspire, the pianists Sînziana Mircea and Mina Beldimănescu together with violinist Ana Popescu-Deutsch and cellist Raphael Lang aim for the sensous and memorable harmonies of George Enescu, Astor Piazzolla or Ioan Dobrinescu. MORE FILM 31 May, 19.00 RCI London Free THE FORERUNNERS: 'E PERICOLOSO SPORGERSI' (1993) Critically acclaimed in the Director's Fortnight in Cannes, Nae Caranfil's debut feature brings out an ironic, witty and realistic image of Romania during the last years of communism. Considered to bridge the gap between the 'old' and the 'new' Romanian cinema, 'E Pericoloso Sporgersi' (a.k.a. 'Don't Lean Out the Window') is the intriguing and humorous story of three Romanians whose lives are revealed to be strongly intertwined as the film progresses.
