Nottara Theatre Tour in London

Nottara Theatre Tour in London

09 - 19/11/2011 @ The Pit, Barbican Centre

Nottara Theatre from Bucharest showcases, at Barbican Centre, Vlad Massaci's stage version of Festen by Thomas Vinterberg and Mogens Rukov. The production is a sample of world class directing and performance and marks the come back of the Romanian theatre on the London stage after more than 13 years of absence.

Based on the first, multi-award-winning Danish film that emerged from the Dogme 95 movement, this movingly realised stage version blends nuanced performances from its Bucharest ensemble, urging us to reflect on the lasting consequences of turning away from the truth.

Festen is the story of the Klingenfeldt-Hansen family gathered to celebrate a patriarch's 60th birthday. But festivities around the banquet table are interrupted as a startling secret, left to fester over years, is exposed. In Massaci's personal view, the story of the troubled Klingenfeldt-Hansen family is the story of the very society we live in: "one that rejects dealing with recent history. If shrinks for nations existed, we should be making appointments" (Vlad Massaci).

Festen @ The Pit is a rare opportunity to encounter several generations of Romanian actors. The exceptional cast includes Alexandru Repan, Emil Hossu, Catrinel Dumitrescu, Ion Grosu and the young Ada Navrot and Dan Bordeianu.

There will be a post show talk on 14 November when Guardian journalist John O'Mahony and Romanian theatre critic Anca Ioniţă will be in conversation with director Vlad Massaci.

Festen @ The Pit is part of Barbican International Theatre Events. The bite season presents fresh new work that hovers on the very edges of classification. Work that marries dance, theatre and music in unexpected ways, explores what theatre could be, stirs emotions, is passionate, mischievous and makes you smile.

About the theatre and the director

Nottara Theatre is one of the oldest repertoire theatres in Bucharest, with a distinctive artistic voice in the Romanian cultural landscape. Acknowledged over the years by audiences and critics alike for the company's outstanding creative ensemble, Nottara has mounted in time over 320 exciting Romanian and international productions. Having showcased work at numerous festivals across the world, from Ukraine to Uruguay, Festen at The Barbican marks the theatre's UK debut.
Director Vlad Massaci is a long-term collaborator of the Nottara Theatre, where he has previously mounted The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh (2005), Platonov by Cehov (2008) and Festen (2009). Self-defined as an advocate of simplicity in theatre, Massaci places the ensemble at the heart of the production, and the world of the production within each actor. His artistic vision is confirmed by the critically acclaimed performances.

Performed in Romanian with English surtitles.
Age guidance: 15+
Contains strong language

PRESS RELEASE NO 112/2011

24 October 2011

CAP reform and the Single European Transport Area at the EESC's October plenary session

At its upcoming plenary session, to be held on 26-27 October, the European Economic and Social Committee will hold two important debates. The first will focus on the new White Paper on Transport to be presented by Siim Kallas, European Commission vice-president with responsibility for transport. The second will follow the presentation of the CAP reform package delivered by Dacian Cioloş, Commissioner for agriculture and rural development.

Venue:       József Antall building, room JAN 2Q2, European Parliament, Brussels

Schedule:  Wednesday, 26 October

4 p.m.: Commissioner Kallas at plenary session

Thursday, 27 October

8.30 a.m.: Press breakfast with EESC member Madi Sharma, launching an EESC online database of good practices for the protection of children against sexual abuse

9.30 a.m.: Commissioner Cioloş at plenary session

Commissioner Siim Kallas will present the EC strategy "Transport 2050", aimed at increasing mobility, removing major barriers and fuelling growth and employment. Some 60 proposals have been proposed in this white paper, which is designed to reduce Europe's dependence on imported oil and cut carbon emissions in transport by 60% by 2050. The Committee plans to adopt its opinion on the Commission's paper, arguing for more coherence between the objectives, the ways in which they would be achieved and the financing required to achieve them. The Committee will recommend in its opinion that the Commission should allocate sufficient funds to transport infrastructure in the post-2013 Multiannual Financial Framework - (EESC Rapporteur Pierre Jean Coulon and co-rapporteur Stefan Back).

EESC President Staffan Nilsson, who welcomes the new CAP's enhanced focus on the environment and sustainability, has invited Commissioner Dacian Cioloş to take part in a debate with EESC members, including EESC Aggriculture Section President Mario Campli. Commissioner Cioloş will present the Commission's legislative package for CAP reform after 2013, which was presented on 12 October. The centrepiece of the proposal is the redistribution of EU direct payments across and within Europe, intended to reduce existing discrepancies between the levels of payments between farmers, regions and Member States. Stronger emphasis is also placed on "green agriculture" and young and small-scale farmers. The package, which should enter into force by January 2014, will be the subject of discussions among the EU institutions and may be adopted by the end of 2012.

The 475th EESC plenary session will open with a brief tribute to Mario Sepi, former Committee president, who passed away on 10 October.

To find out more, please check the Plenary session agenda or the Press breakfast webpage.

The debates with the commissioners will be broadcast on Europe by Satellite.

Taking place from 6.30pm
on Thursday 3rd November
at the V&A Museum of Childhood
Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green
London E2 9PA

The event itself will start promptly at 7pm

Poet in the City is delighted to invite you to an event marking National Adoption Week and featuring two celebrated authors who have written compellingly about their own experiences of adoption. The experience of adoption is difficult for all sides of the adoption triangle but willing parents are still needed for the very many 'children who wait' in Britain today. If you are an adopted person, an adoptive parent, or simply interested in children or in poetry then do not miss this moving, funny and thought provoking evening.

Jeanette Winterson is the author of Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985), The Passion (1987) and many other novels including two books for children, Tanglewreck (2007) and The Battle of the Sun (2009). She will be reading from her new memoir about her childhood and the effects of adoption in a creative life. Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is published by Jonathan Cape on 27 October 2011.

Jackie Kay's first book of poetry The Adoption Papers (1991) is an emotional account of her early life. More recently, she is the author of Red Dust Road (2010) – the story of finding her birth father and mother – and Fiere (2011 - both Picador), a book of poems coming out of that experience.

The event will be chaired by Margaret Reynolds, Professor of English at Queen Mary, University of London, presenter of BBC Radio 4 'Adventures in Poetry', and the author of The Sappho History (2003). She is also an adoptive mother.

The Lost and Found event is being held in partnership with the V&A Museum of Childhood and Queen Mary, University of London. It is part of National Adoption Week 2011, and is supported by Jonathan Cape and Picador. It has been programmed and managed and presented by Margaret Reynolds, Professor of English at Queen Mary, University of London.
