Subject: Paid Market Research Focus Group for Romanian Nationals - Thurs 3rd April
Dear Ionela,Following our phone conversation, I am sending you my query in writing.
I work at a market research company and we are looking for London-based Romanian nationals who are aged between 25-50yrs. We are holding a paid market research discussion in the evening of Thurs 3rd April in Central London; the group will last 90mins and participants will be paid cash as a thanks for their time.
I wonder if you know of any online forums or social groups I may not have already tried to find Romanian people who work in more manual jobs - for example, shop/waiting/bar/cleaning staff or builders/painters, etc. Unfortunately, administrative staff are not correct for this particular project but anyone who might like to be considered for future projects could get in touch too!
I have attached a poster in Word and PDF form - if you were willing to post it somewhere on my behalf or forward onto anyone who could help me, I would be very appreciative! Any advice gratefully received! My contact email is team@leftfield.co.uk and my phone number is 0203 582 0999. These details are also on the poster.
Many thanks for your time and help,
Helen King

ROMANIA AT THE LONDON BOOK FAIR 2014: ALL IS OLD AND NEW IS ALL
Our programme at one of the world's most consequential congregations in the realm of books gravitates around the age-old interplay of cultural tradition and change. The events, unfolding at Earls Court, Europe House, the European Bookshop as well as our home at 1 Belgrave Square, will epitomise this fruitful dialectic, evoked with laconic expressivity by Romania's greatest poet, Mihai Eminescu, in the verse borrowed as the motto of our presence at LBF 2014. LBF 2014: ANCIENT DELIS - TREI PARALE ENSEMBLE IN CONCERT
Engaged for years in a passionate effort to revive Romanian court and urban music of the 18th and early 19th centuries, TREI PARALE, a group of versatile musicians playing old instruments, has succeeded in rescuing some of the juiciest scores of this forgotten, yet marvellous tradition. The mellow, jaunty melodies, which provided the background of a lazy life of Oriental indulgence, constitute the musical ingredient of our programme at LBF 2014. MORE

Poezie cu Gabriela Costescu de Ziua Internationala a Fericirii
În numele busuiocului
Când pornesc oile la vale,
Printre statuile brazilor,
Talanga behăie blând
Ca o adiere de toamnă,
Mioriţă laie, mioriţă laie...
Dorul de ducă,
Cântec străvechi înăbuşit,
Din căuşul văilor,
Răzbate prin cojoace,
Puse la uscat
Pe speteaza strâmbă
De atâta dor şi aşteptare.
Sub streaşina stânii
Ca la subţioara stăpânei,
O tufă de busuioc
De ani buni slujind
Nemărginirea doinei.
Tămâia strămoşilor
Presărată în poiană, la izvor,
Şi în bătătura ancestrală,
Mai veghează somnul pruncilor,
Copaie ferită din calea drobului
De sare zbicindu-se pe cuptior.
Peste horele amintirilor
Inima îmi pictează legende
În numele busuiocului.

In the Name of the Basil
When the flocks pervade the valley,
Between the statues of the evergreen trees,
The bellwether is calmly baaing,
Like a breath of autumn:
Ewe-lamb, black and gray,
Ewe-lamb, sweet and small…
The wanderlust, an old softy song
From the nest of the valley
Is piercing through the sheepskin coats
Hanged to dry
On the twisted backrest
Of the greatest longing and awaiting.
Under the eaves of the sheepfold cottage
Like the mistress's armpit,
A bush of basil
|
In the name of the basil.
"In the Name of the Basil" syntagmatically speaking is reminiscent of the famous novel by Umberto Eco, „The Name of the Rose". Furthermore this association is a constant lyrical metaphor in Gabriella Costescu's poetry just like footprints on a forest track.
The name Basil comes from the Greek βασιλευς (Basileus) meaning "king" and it is linked to the place where the emperors Constantine and Helen discovered the Holy Cross, a place where the basil was abundantly growing, or so is said. Anyway, the basil is known in tradition as "The flower of the Cross". Therefore a bundle of basil is used in Orthodox rituals to sprinkle holy water.
Because of its gastronomic qualities, the basil remains "the king" (uncrowned) of the spices, at least according to those who have studied its virtues. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, basil was also used in "some royal ointments or medications".
Why and how the basil turned up to be invoked sententionally in Gabriella's poetry, only the poetess is able to tell us: "In the round dances of memories/ My hearth is painting legends,/ In the name of the basil." (In the Name of the Basil).
The poetical relocation of the basil gives Gabriella the possibility to recover flavors of ancestral meanings and practices not far from the present, meanings linked with the eros as well as ethos and thanatos. But in turn the rhetoric is bound to tradition, which makes it difficult to find equivalents in the language of Shakespeare.
Returning to our childhood is not only nostalgia for that immemorial time but a need for innocence and purity as trading coin in those days filled with aggressions and lacking horizons.
