FORMATORI:

Improving family policy across Member States: Hearing discusses problem of ageing population

The EESC has conducted a hearing on 'The role of family policy in demographic change: Sharing best practice among Member States'. Held on March 21, this meeting consulted a range of perspectives from a number of stakeholders on family matters, with a view to improving and sharing practices between Member States. The hearing was organised at the request of the Hungarian Presidency, to target the problem of how to give tangible recognition to the substantial contribution that families make to society.

In his opening address, Staffan Nilsson, EESC President said: "Europe must set an example in matters of intergenerational equity and solidarity and the problem of ageing population is both a challenge and an opportunity for Europe".

The hearing was chaired by Luca Jahier, President of the EESC Various Interests' Group and included presentations from Miklós Soltész, Hungarian Minister of State for Social, Family and Youth Affairs and Anna Záborská, Chair of the Intergroup on Family, Protection of Childhood and Solidarity between the Generations. There were also contributions from experts, contrasting the experience of different Member States.

According to the EESC, the social and economic benefits of the family should be appreciated. Insufficient support for families could result in a substantial increase in costs, especially in terms of welfare services.

Demographic challenges need to be quickly tackled by providing incentives to work and viewing older people as an asset rather than a burden. The Committee is also committed to looking ahead and is already working with the future Polish presidency on demography and the labour market. Furthermore, it intends to support the idea of proclaiming 2014 as a European Year for families.

The Hungarian Presidency took the chance of this hearing to launch at EU level its thematic week "Europe for families, Families for Europe" which will be organised next week in Budapest and which will be concluded by an Informal Council of Ministers for family, to which the Committee will present the results of the hearing and its own contribution.

Standing Together - Support the 112 - 2011

The 112 – 2011

Standing Together are again organising a charity bike ride to take place on the 7th May 2011. We are going to cycle 112 kilometres in one day - that is one kilometre for every woman who dies per year as a result of domestic violence. This was a great success in 2009 and 2010, and we hope to make it bigger and better in 2011. The aim of the event is to:

• Highlight the issue of domestic violence
• Ensure people understand the damage caused by domestic violence
• Raise funds to combat domestic violence though a coordinated response to this crime

Participants can enter in one of three ways:

The 112 – The Challenge
This is for the more adventurous cyclist who really wants to push him or herself. The expectation is that the rider will complete the whole course in a day having passed through 2 checkpoints around the route. Hopefully some form of “peloton” will form to aid progress. The route takes you from Windsor through the Thames Valley and takes in, via generally quiet roads, some lovely villages and scenery to the west of Windsor.

The 112 – The Relay
This is where a group of cyclists want to do the whole route together but do not want to ride the full distance individually. It will require riders to take it in turns covering the route whilst their other team members follow in a car, with others talking over when exhaustion strikes. Logistically this will probably work best with 3/4 riders with a car capable of carrying the spare bikes.

The 112 – The Roundabout
This is a more local approach! A ride for those who want to take part, but are not sure their legs will hold out for the full 112km! This option covers 11.2 miles in a loop on the roads around Windsor Great Park. For those who would prefer, this distance can also be run.

Health and Safety – each rider or team is responsible for their own safety; participants must use an appropriate and reliable bike and should be correctly attired. Participants would be expected to ensure they have sufficient refreshments although we will attempt to secure drinks/snacks for those involved.

Routes – We have maps for these routes. They will be made available to participants on the day.

Numbers for the full distance must be limited to 112 so if you are interested and do not want to miss this opportunity to help make a real difference please read and complete the form overleaf. Places will be snapped up quickly.

Anthony Wills, Chief Executive

Apele repezi dintre inimi
Şi dintre uitãrile destinului

Mi-ai învãţat dorul sã colinde
printre casele înrobite de secunda de fiere
sã lase cetina sã zboare spiralã peste cer
cu ochii copiilor rãsãrind zâmbetele bunicilor.

M-ai învãţat sã picur dragoste
Paşilor desculţi printre morminte
M-ai învãţat sã iubesc istoria
Respirând între douã inchiziţii

M-ai invãţat parfumul florilor
Muzica sferelor iar zambetul stelelor
Sã-mi fie frate şi sorã drumurilor
Întortocheate de destin.

M-ai învãţat sã sãrut tãcerea pe gurã
Pãtimaş, sã o strâng cu aripile îngerilor
Pânã când rãcnetul cuvintelor
Va şuiera printre neputinţe strigând

Pace!

Dar tu ai învãţat?
